Concept and Objectives
For this gig poster, I tried to capture emotions I feel while listening to some of John Denver’s more relaxed songs. I wanted a 70’s relaxed/return to nature kind of vibe. I listened to his music for two weeks while I worked to make sure these feelings of connecting with nature, vision, passion and sunshine were incorporated into this poster.
Sketches
I went through a more rigorous sketching process with this project to find the best way to convey an emotion. I tried sketching various scenes and mostly images that would take someone back to a simpler, more relaxed time. In the end, my favorite was a 70’s girl with a mountain scene reflecting in her rose colored glasses. I liked this idea because she’s really close to the viewer in the poster making the feeling more intimate. It also brings in that intimacy with nature as well. I really tried to work out the sketching for the hair because I knew that was going to be the hardest part.
Drafts and Feedback
I started out using a few textures that weren’t my own to get an idea of how I wanted the overall project to look. I then tried making the skin a bit darker to bring out the gold rims on the glasses and added some blush. I also tried to make the girl look happier and defined the face as she looked more serious and manly after my first try. I then played around with all kinds of hair ideas/ styles and made the flowers a little less chaotic by turning them into a daisy crown.
Final
This image meets my objectives because it captures that peaceful/out in nature feel through the intimacy of her being so close to the viewer and through the nature scene reflecting in her glasses. I feel the font also captures the era really well and the flowery aspects of the time. I can see all of my descriptive words (nature, vision, passion and sunshine) portrayed in this poster from the relaxed/happy expression to the waves in her hair. This poster feels like John Denver sounds in his more relaxed songs.
